Today’s Globe and Mail:
U.K. zoo announces virgin birth of 5 Komodo dragons
In an evolutionary twist, the newborns' eight-year-old mother Flora shocked staff at Chester Zoo in northern England when she became pregnant without ever having a male partner or even being exposed to the opposite sex.
The evolutionary breakthrough could have far-reaching consequences for endangered species.
Scientists hope the discovery will pave the way to finding other species capable of self fertilization.
DNA paternity tests confirmed the lack of male input, although the brood are not exact clones of their mother.
Conclusions:
- Women will always find a way
- After all immaculate conception might have happened!
- What are guys good for, anyways?

you're so funny Bahar!
yup, women will always find a way ;-)
I was reading some of the comments and seems that all the babies are male...
Apparently she has just added 5 more problems to the world!! ;))

I always thought that virgin birth offsprings have to be female,so it appears that Komodo dragons' only reproduce males with this method. I wonder if this is the only similarity between Komodo dragons and human beings?!
I suppose they better not rely too much on virgin birth or they'll die out!
And Bahar is absolutely right, evolutionary role of the male sex is merely copulation, so I guess you might as well call guys "the redundant species" these days...
Not to gross you out or anything, but it seems that if females are not fertilized, they will produce male offspring so that they can copulate with the mother next time.
