Margaret is Catching Up!

Speaking of the devil (Kyoto Protocol), people have finally realized what is going on:

Kyoto is also dead because of China and India, which have 40 per cent of the world's population. They're having no part of it. They'd rather pull hundreds of millions of people up from poverty.

Kyoto always was a fantasy. Even if its emissions targets were capable of being met, the effect on global temperatures was forecast to be minuscule. And that assumes that the central uncertainties of climate science are settled, which they decidedly are not.

Fans of energy conservation and alternative energy, however, should not despair. Suddenly it has dawned on the West that we're running out of fossil fuel -- not next month, but not too long from now. Prices are going steeply up. Even worse, a frightening amount of the world's oil and gas is controlled by nasty regimes such as Russia, Venezuela, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Soaring prices and security of supply concerns will soon do what all the delegates to Montreal cannot.

Meantime, enjoy the show. The 10,000 delegates to Montreal, the ex-government of Canada and the ex-environment minister, to say nothing of armies of reporters, are trying to persuade you that the parrot's still alive. It is not. It is defunct. It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. - Margaret Wente for the Globe and Mail
