Side Effects of Running a Campaign!

I have found a good metaphor for running a campaign. Have you ever seen a rat running in a Ferris wheel? That's how it is! You have to run, to run a campaign! Especially, if you are the candidate, the manager, the coordinator, financial officer, accountant, secretary, PR, driver and the graphic designer! I suppose that’s why most campaigns raise enough money to hire about 10 people or so!

So, now imagine that you are the rat and need to run 24/7. What do you need the most? Fuel! That’s right! You need your fuel handy at all times, otherwise the ferris wheel stops, and you don’t want that!

What is fuel?

For starters, you need something to keep you up and awake: espresso! You need something to keep you energized, warm and also prevent hunger. Tea, honey and cognac is a good suggestion except that you don’t want to be drunk when you knock on people’s doors. I suppose that’s why lattes, cappuccinos and muffins were invented.

You may have to skip lunch or dinner every now and then, and work up a big appetite for the next meal. So, you eat big and your body learns to “store” energy and fat, as if you live in the middle of a desert!

In certain circumstances, the only thing that can fuel you up and get you running is good old-fashioned Coca Cola! Since you are never home and you combine your volunteer meetings with your meal time, you end up visiting all the burger/pizza joints in the area!

Mix high-calorie drinks with pizza, burger and muffin for about 4 months, and next thing you know, you have gained 10-15 lbs!

So, yours truly is now stuck with an extra 15 lbs on top of bills, over-due accounting, receipts, letters, etc all leftovers of the campaign! What a treat!

Yeah, yeah, I know that I have to start working out again! But where is the damn motivation to do so?

Any suggestions?
